DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In a move to improve transportation options for Coloradans, Governor Jared Polis signed SB26-150 - RTD Reform into law today. The bill, sponsored by Senators Matt Ball and Iman Jodeh, and Representatives Meg Froelich and Jamie Jackson, aims to modernize the Regional Transportation District (RTD) structure and expand transit lines to better serve the growing population in the metro area.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Polis emphasized the need for affordable, reliable, and convenient transportation for all Coloradans. He stated that this new law will bring more efficiency, accountability, and transparency to RTD operations and ultimately save people money while getting them where they need to go.
Senator Matt Ball of Denver expressed his excitement about the legislation, stating that millions of Coloradans living on the Front Range have been stuck with an underdeveloped transit system compared to other cities. He believes that this critical legislation will provide cleaner and more effective transit options for residents.
Senator Iman Jodeh of Aurora echoed Senator Ball's sentiments about the importance of public transit in a world-class city like Denver. She emphasized that reliable transportation is crucial for families, especially those from marginalized communities who may not have access to a car. The RTD Accountability Committee, chaired by Maria Garcia Berry, also expressed their support for the new law. Berry stated that a robust and highly functioning RTD is essential for a strong and accessible metropolitan area.
