Governor's emergency funds tapped to assist ICE in transporting dangerous illegal alien criminals out of Idaho

Boise, Idaho ~ Boise, Idaho - Governor Brad Little and the Board of Examiners have approved a request to allocate up to $300,000 from the Governor's emergency fund to assist the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in transporting dangerous illegal alien criminals out of Idaho jails. This decision was made during a meeting on Tuesday.

The move comes after Governor Little's announcement earlier this month that the Idaho State Police (ISP) had entered into an agreement with ICE under the 287(g) program. This program allows ICE to delegate certain immigration officer functions to state and local law enforcement officers, under the supervision of ICE and through a signed agreement.

In May, Governor Little sent a letter to ISP Colonel Bill Gardiner requesting estimates for transportation costs. In the letter, he expressed concern about the influx of illegal immigrants into the country under the Biden Administration's policies and stated that with President Trump back in office, there is hope for addressing this public safety emergency by removing dangerous criminals from our streets. He also emphasized his desire to strengthen Idaho's partnership with President Trump in addressing this national issue.

Colonel Gardiner responded with a letter stating that it could cost up to $300,000 to carry out up to 100 transports, each including multiple dangerous illegal alien criminals.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Idaho is utilizing the Jail Enforcement Model under the 287(g) agreement. This model focuses on identifying and processing removable aliens who have been arrested on criminal charges and are being held in state or local detention facilities. The state will use this authority to transport convicted violent and dangerous illegal aliens who have completed their sentences out of local jails.

The Governor's emergency fund has been utilized in various situations in the past, such as supporting ISP missions to border states, funding investigations for Bryan Kohberger - who is accused of killing four University of Idaho students - and fighting against fentanyl.

This decision to allocate funds from the Governor's emergency fund to support ICE in transporting dangerous illegal alien criminals out of Idaho jails is a significant step in addressing the ongoing issue of illegal immigration and ensuring public safety. With the 287(g) program in place, state and local law enforcement officers will have the necessary authority and resources to assist in this effort under the supervision of ICE.
