Hell Fact or Fiction? (Part 4) - The Precedent of Jonah: From the Earth's Bars to the Lake of Fire

TAMPA, Fla. - TelAve -- The physical reality of the underworld is verified by remarkable historical testimonies. The prophet Jonah provided a riveting, firsthand account of dying and visiting hell. Drowned in the Mediterranean Sea around 793 to 760 B.C., Jonah's soul went down to the "bottoms of the mountains" where the earth's structural bars locked around him. While God miraculously kept his physical body from decay inside a specially prepared fish, Jonah's spirit cried out from the literal "belly of hell".

Jesus later authenticated Jonah's experience in Matthew 12:40, declaring that just as Jonah was three days and nights in the whale's belly, so would the Son of man be three days and nights in the heart of the earth. Jesus used Jonah's literal timeline as a prophetic sign of His own authority, linking a real historical event to His looming death, burial, and supernatural descent. While in the heart of the earth, Jesus preached victory over death and the grave to the dead and principality spirits, assuring them of their final fate. However, Jesus Himself was never confined in Sheol or Hell; rather, He abided in Abraham's Bosom, the lower compartment of comfort reserved for the righteous.

Before the cross, these two distinct subterranean compartments sat directly next to one another, separated only by a great fixed gulf as revealed in Luke 16. The rich man could see and speak across this divide, proving their close proximity. Following His three-day descent, Christ completed His work of redemption, broke the power of the grave, and resurrected the righteous captives out of the earth. Because His shed blood officially opened the pathway to heaven, the souls of believers no longer descend into the earth at death; instead, they immediately ascend to Paradise in the Third Heaven to be present with the Lord. Consequently, Abraham's Bosom was completely vacated and relocated. With the righteous compartment removed, the gates of Hell were structurally expanded to consume the lower regions, leaving the underworld solely to hold the unrighteous until the Final Judgment.

Mortal man has no right to question the justice of God; as Matthew 10:28 commands, fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. For believers, death loses its sting, as 1 Corinthians 15:55 declares, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" Hell is now a temporary holding cell. At the final judgment, John witnessed Death and Hell surrendered before being cast permanently into the eternal Lake of Fire as outlined in Revelation 20:14. Hell is undeniably a fact, and humanity avoids its gates only by accepting Jesus Christ.
