April 1, 2026 ~ Houston Mayor Announces Timeline for Renaming Cesar Chavez Blvd.

In a press conference held today, Mayor John Whitmire revealed the City's plans to rename Cesar Chavez Blvd. in light of recent revelations about the former leader of the United Farmer Workers Union. The decision comes after receiving input from members of the community and elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, who spoke during today's City Council meeting.

During her speech, Rep. Garcia urged the city to change the street's name in honor of Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farmer Workers Union. The mayor has taken this suggestion into consideration and has announced a timeline for the renaming process.

According to the timeline, on April 1st, the Planning and Development Department will send out notices to abutting property owners and other agencies regarding the name change. This includes a total of 113 parcels, with 75 parcels being addressed on side streets and 38 parcels addressed with Cesar Chavez Blvd.

Following this, there will be a thirty-day public comment period from May 1st to May 13th. On May 13th, the item will be placed on the City Council agenda for a vote with a 30-day effective date. During this time, Houston Public Works will install new street signs and notify property owners and other agencies of the name change.

The mayor hopes that this timeline will allow for ample opportunities for public input and ensure a smooth transition to honor Dolores Huerta's contributions to the United Farmer Workers Union.
