TelAve News/10893665
April 16, 2026 ~ Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced today that the deadline to respond to the state's freeze on public safety grant funding has been extended from Monday, April 20 to Wednesday, April 22. This decision was made after discussions with the Governor's office and in order to allow for more time to continue productive conversations with various stakeholders.

The Special Called Houston City Council meeting, originally scheduled for Monday, has also been postponed until Wednesday. This will give Mayor Whitmire's administration additional time to work with City Council members, law enforcement, and community members in finding a solution that balances the need to protect citizens, essential services, and the city's finances.

The Mayor emphasized that this situation is a crisis and has already resulted in the loss of state grant funding for important departments such as the Houston Police and Fire Departments. This not only affects public safety services across the city but also preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and operations of the Department of Homeland Security.

Mayor Whitmire acknowledged that effective operation of public safety departments relies on a combination of local, state, and federal resources. However, he expressed optimism about the progress being made through constructive conversations with all parties involved.
