Juneau: CBJ Reminds Public of Costs and Fines of Illegal Dumping
TelAve News/10896321
~ Juneau, Alaska - As the spring season begins, the Juneau Police Department (JPD) and the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) Streets Division are reminding residents about the consequences of illegal dumping within the municipality. This comes as both departments have seen an increase in reports of trash being dumped and vehicles being abandoned on public and private property.
According to CBJ health code, it is a violation to deposit garbage, refuse, rubbish or any other waste material larger than one square foot on a street, sidewalk or other public place, or on private property within the municipality. Those found guilty of this offense can face fines of up to $300 per occurrence (CBJ 36.30.030). Additionally, vehicles left unattended on public property for more than 48 hours may be impounded as "abandoned vehicles" (CBJ 72.23.010). The owners of these abandoned vehicles will be responsible for all impound fees, which can amount to $300 or more, as well as a fine of up to $500.

In response to reports of trash and abandoned vehicles in various locations throughout Juneau, JPD and CBJ Streets have launched a coordinated effort to address these issues. One particular area that has been targeted is the end of Commercial Boulevard. However, due to limited space at the impound lot, removal of these abandoned vehicles has been delayed. Despite this challenge, both departments are committed to ensuring public safety by dedicating significant staff time and operational costs towards these cleanup efforts.
To help alleviate this issue in the future, residents are encouraged to take advantage of free drop-off programs for junk vehicles at Skookum Recycling and household hazardous waste at CBJ Recycleworks. More information about these programs can be found on juneau.org/engineering-public-works/recycleworks.
The City and Borough of Juneau would like to thank the public for their cooperation in reporting these violations. Residents can continue to report any issues by calling (907) 586-0600. By working together, we can keep our community clean and safe for everyone.
