Juneau: Suicide Basin Outburst Underway – Minor Flooding Impacts Expected

~ Juneau, Alaska- The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Mendenhall Lake and River after a glacier-dammed lake outburst at Suicide Basin. According to the warning, minor flooding impacts are expected in the late hours of Monday through Tuesday afternoon in areas near the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, Mendenhall Campground, Skater's Cabin Road, View Drive, and possibly below Back Loop Bridge.

The forecast predicts that the Mendenhall River will reach a crest between 11 feet and 12 feet on Tuesday, September 16, between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. In response to this warning, the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is taking precautionary measures by deploying teams with sandbags and fill material to View Drive where evacuation is advised.

Residents in the surrounding area are urged to closely monitor conditions and take necessary precautions. CBJ also advises residents to abide by road and trail closures and avoid the Mendenhall River until further notice for their safety as well as others'. The Kaxdigoowu Heen Dei/Mendenhall River Trail will be closed.
