BRISTOL, Conn. - TelAve -- Justin Calabrese, entrepreneur, author, and business consultant, is sharing his personal perspective to raise awareness around youth mental health and the long-term impact that certain faith-based youth program experiences can have on individuals later in life.

Calabrese states that, between 2004 and 2008, during his time in the Senior Pilgrim Fellowship (SPF) youth group at Wapping Community Church, he believes he experienced verbal harassment, emotional distress, and participation in activities that he now views as degrading. According to Calabrese, these experiences occurred under the leadership of Kristen Kleiman, who at that time served in a youth leadership role.

"I think what affected me most was the environment that was created," Calabrese said. "I think there were lessons and activities that promoted separation, such as labeling youth as 'popular' versus 'non-popular,' and I believe those experiences stayed with me far longer than anyone realized at the time."

Calabrese emphasizes that he is speaking solely from his own memory, interpretation, and lived experience. He acknowledges that church leadership has stated they were not aware of what he describes as a "secret agenda" during that period. "I think it's possible that leadership did not fully see what was happening on the ground," he said. "But I also think it's important to talk about how these experiences can shape mental health years later."

Seventeen years later, Calabrese says he is choosing to speak out not to assign blame, but to encourage reflection, accountability, and awareness for current and former youth participants. He hopes his story encourages young people involved in similar programs to speak up if something does not feel right and to seek support early.

Kristen Kleiman is currently a minister at First Congregational Church. Calabrese notes that his intention is not to make statements of fact about her current role, but to provide context related to his personal experience during his youth.

Calabrese confirms that he has been in communication with Wapping Community Church and individuals involved, with the goal of resolving concerns and addressing his claims in a constructive manner. "I think open dialogue is the only way healing happens," he said. "This is about mental health, accountability, and making sure today's youth feel safe, supported, and valued."

Calabrese encourages churches, youth organizations, and parents to regularly evaluate youth programming, leadership oversight, and the emotional well-being of participants. "I think silence helps no one," he added. "If sharing my story helps even one person feel less alone, then it's worth it."
