Kansas: Earnings Tax Refund
TelAve News/10791832
~ Residents of Kansas City have a unique opportunity to apply for a possible earnings tax refund. This one-time offer is available for the years 2018 through 2022 and applications must be submitted by the end of 2023. After this period, residents will need to file their taxes by the federal tax deadline each year, with any late filing subject to standard tax penalties and interest.
Those who are unsure if they are eligible for the refund should consider if they are non-resident workers for a non-resident employer who mistakenly withholds the Kansas City ETAX, or if they are non-resident employees working for a Kansas City employer but teleworking or travelling outside the city for work. Additionally, Kansas City residents who have been withheld more than 1% ETAX by their employer may also be eligible.

In order to apply for a refund, individuals must provide documentation that shows they have worked outside of Kansas City. This could include letters or emails from employers verifying days worked outside the city, appointment calendars, work and/or travel orders indicating change in duty station, time and/or payment records, certain types of receipts, and proof of change of address such as utility bills, lease agreements and property tax receipts.
The refund can be applied for through Quick Tax or by mail; all income information and supporting documentation must be included in either case. To check the status of a refund application, individuals can use Quick Tax, email refunds@kcmo.org or call 816-513-1120.
