TelAve News/10904813
~ Kansas City Water officials are currently conducting an investigation into the cause of a street cave-in that occurred along Southwest Trafficway between 28th Street and 31st Street. The incident, which took place on Thursday, August 27, 2026, has prompted changes to traffic patterns in the affected area.

Starting at 9 a.m., motorists can expect to encounter lane reductions in both directions along Southwest Trafficway. Southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane starting at the Interstate 35 exit ramp and continuing through the affected area. Similarly, northbound traffic will also be reduced to one lane from 31st Street to Interstate 35.

These lane reductions are expected to remain in place for most of the day as crews continue their investigation and assess conditions at the site. In order to facilitate traffic flow and support investigation efforts, crews have removed median barriers separating northbound and southbound traffic.

KC Water is advising drivers to avoid the area if possible and seek alternate routes. For those who must travel through the corridor, delays should be expected and caution should be exercised in and around the work zone.

Updates will be provided by KC Water as more information becomes available. This includes any additional changes to traffic patterns and estimates for when normal traffic operations may resume.
