Legislators, survivors and gun-safety advocates support Governor Newsom's signature on California's latest gun-safety package

What you need to know: The bills signed into law yesterday by Governor Newsom address several points across California's gun-violence prevention system — from protective-order enforcement and firearm storage to research, reporting, training, youth services and emerging firearm technologies.

SACRAMENTO – Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced his signature on a comprehensive package of bills to further prevent gun violence and strengthen California's gun safety leadership.

Taken together, these bills address multiple stages of firearm-violence prevention: identifying and understanding crime guns, preventing prohibited possession, intervening when someone poses a risk, safely storing firearms, improving training and accountability, supporting young survivors and responding to emerging technologies.

Here's what leaders are saying about the Governor's latest action to protect California communities:

Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda): "Thank you to Governor Newsom for signing the California Firearm Printing Prevention Act, a bill that will make California safer. A 3D printed gun doesn't have a serial number or a paper trail and should never have been produced. AB 2047 stops these weapons at the source, before they can harm our communities."

Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino), co-founder of California's Gun Violence Working Group: "California has become a national leader in reducing gun violence because we've made a sustained commitment to investing in smart, proven strategies to stop violence before it occurs. AB 2378 builds on that leadership by creating a dedicated Office of Community Violence Intervention to strengthen and coordinate this lifesaving work across our state. I'm grateful to Governor Newsom for signing this important legislation and for his continued leadership in protecting our communities."

Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson): "AB 2339 strengthens California's commitment to keeping firearms out of the hands of individuals who are prohibited from possessing them and ensuring that these safeguards work as intended. If someone is prohibited from possessing a firearm, the information needed to enforce that prohibition must be accurate, complete, and timely. This bill improves the reporting process when an individual has been involuntarily admitted to a mental health facility because they pose a threat to themselves or others. Closing gaps in the information available to the Department of Justice will help ensure that firearm background checks have the information they need to be effective.I am proud to partner with the Attorney General on this important legislation. AB 2339 reinforces existing safeguards, gives law enforcement an important tool, and helps protect Californians from preventable firearm-related tragedies."

Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco (D-Downey): "A loaded firearm in the hands of a young person is a warning sign we cannot ignore. AB 2636 ensures that judges consider all facts when determining whether rehabilitation and deferred entry of judgment are appropriate. This balanced approach holds young people accountable, addresses the circumstances that led them into court, and helps prevent future violence. I thank Governor Newsom for strengthening public safety while preserving opportunities for rehabilitation."

Assemblymember Catherine Stefani (D-San Francisco): "Gun violence is preventable, and we must act before it is too late. AB 1753 helps ensure firearms and ammunition are surrendered when someone poses a danger, while AB 1974 gives people a safe, voluntary way to temporarily store firearms outside the home during moments of crisis. Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland): "The State has invested significant resources into a robust database of information about crime guns that have caused harm in our communities. That data is powerful, and allowing our trusted partners in state agencies, local governments, and higher education to request it gives them one more tool to keep our communities safe. Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Bakersfield): "Every parent should be able to send their child to school, to a friend's house, or out into their community without worrying about a ghost gun ending up in the wrong hands. We've seen the damage ghost guns can do. When someone who has already been convicted of a serious firearm offense can turn around and get access to another gun, that puts our children, our families, our law enforcement officers, and our entire community at risk. That's why I authored SB 1220, the Peace Officer Protection Act. This is about protecting families, supporting our peace officers, and respecting the rights of responsible gun owners while making it harder for illegal firearms to end up in the wrong hands. I'm proud to have authored this measure, and grateful to Governor Newsom for signing it into law. Our communities deserve to be safe."
