Long Beach Airport Complex Generates $9 Billion in Economic Impact, Supports 42,000 Jobs
TelAve News/10844273
Long Beach, CA ~ A recent study conducted by Unison Consulting has shed light on the significant economic impact of Long Beach Airport (LGB) and its surrounding businesses. The study, released today, reveals that the LGB Aviation Complex is responsible for generating a total economic output of $9 billion and supporting nearly 42,000 jobs in the region.
Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the crucial role of LGB in the city's economic vitality, stating, "Long Beach Airport and the many surrounding businesses create thousands of jobs and bring in billions of dollars that have a significant impact on our city's economy." He also noted that this report highlights how LGB has been a critical cornerstone of the economy for a century.
The study measured the total economic impact of both LGB and the broader Complex, which includes all business entities within a defined area north of Interstate 405 and south of Carson Street. This area is bordered by Clark Avenue and Cherry Avenue, with most properties owned by the City of Long Beach.
According to data collected in 2023, LGB directly contributed to the regional economy by supporting 10,753 jobs, including 8,042 in Long Beach alone. It also generated $589 million in labor income. When considering businesses clustered around LGB, the Airport Complex supports a total of 41,721 jobs, $2.7 billion in labor income, and $9 billion in economic output across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.

Fourth District Councilman Daryl Supernaw praised LGB for its contribution to job creation and tourism. He stated that this report reflects their commitment to innovation and supporting the local economy. Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr also highlighted LGB as a champion of local economic growth and credited its continued development for attracting more businesses and creating more opportunities for success.
It is worth noting that no local taxpayer dollars are used to fund Long Beach Airport. Instead, its economic activities contribute significantly to tax revenues, which fund local government services and public infrastructure.
The study also highlights the positive impact of visitor spending, which accounts for 54% of LGB's total output. Visitors to Southern California who arrive through LGB spend an average of $640 per person, generating more than 6,400 jobs and contributing $887 million in economic output through spending on accommodations, dining, and local attractions.
Airport Director Cynthia Guidry expressed her delight at the report's findings, stating that the LGB Aviation Complex is a dynamic commercial hub and a catalyst for innovation and opportunity in Long Beach and surrounding communities. She also noted that LGB is known not only for convenient air travel but also for its significant role in supporting the community's economy.
