Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Public Library Celebrates LGBTQIA+ Pride Month with Inclusive Programs and Events
The Long Beach Public Library is gearing up to celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month this June with a month-long series of inclusive, family-friendly programs and events. The library's Pride celebration aims to honor the strength, creativity, and courage of the LGBTQIA+ community through various forms of art, music, film, and community connection.
Mayor Richardson expressed his pride in the city's support for the LGBTQIA+ community, stating that the library's programs offer meaningful opportunities for residents of all ages to come together and celebrate individuality. He also believes that these events will foster a stronger sense of belonging throughout Long Beach.
Throughout the month of June, residents and visitors are invited to participate in free programs and events at various library locations across the city. These events cater to children, teens, adults, and families alike. Additionally, community members can explore curated Pride-themed book and film recommendations and enjoy a full calendar of special events throughout the month. She believes that their Pride Month programs will encourage creativity, connection, and learning while uplifting diverse voices and stories that strengthen the community.
Some highlighted events during Pride Month include an author talk by award-winning poet José Enrique Medina at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library on June 4th for adults. Families can attend Family Pride Storytime at Billie Jean King Main Library on June 13th or 17th for age-appropriate stories promoting love, diversity, and inclusion.
Teens are invited to decorate colorful glass lanterns at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library on June 16th during a hands-on art activity celebrating Pride in a welcoming environment. Adults can attend Bibliotherapy Tea at Billie Jean King Main Library on the same day for an evening of Pride-focused art projects, meditation, journal writing, and books by and about the LGBTQIA+ community.
Children ages 6 and up can enjoy Pride-themed crafts at El Dorado Neighborhood Library on June 17th during School Age Crafternoon. And finally, on June 27th, the library will host a family-friendly Pride Party at Billie Jean King Main Library featuring Drag Queen Loteria, games, music, crafts, and activities for all ages.
