Madison: Make Sure Your Home is Winter Ready!
TelAve News/10883064
~ As winter brings snow and frigid temperatures, it is important for home and business owners to take precautions to protect their water pipes from freezing or bursting. The Madison Water Utility has provided helpful tips to ensure the safety of homes and businesses during this season.
One of the first steps recommended by the utility is to double-check outdoor hose bibs. This involves disconnecting all hoses, turning off faucets, and draining any remaining water. This simple task can prevent water from freezing in the pipes and causing damage.
Proper insulation is also crucial in preventing frozen pipes. Homeowners are advised to check their basements for any areas where cold air may be entering and insulate pipes in unheated spaces such as crawl spaces, garages, and attics. It is also recommended to leave some heat on in unused areas of the home or business.
In case of leaving home for a few days, it is important to keep the thermostat on at least 55 degrees and open cabinets where sink plumbing is against an outside wall. This allows warm air to circulate around the pipes and prevent them from freezing.

The utility also warns against using an open flame to thaw frozen pipes as it can be dangerous. Instead, they advise calling 608-266-4661 for assistance with frozen water pipes.
Another important precaution is ensuring that furnace vents are clear of snow and ice. A clogged vent can lead to a buildup of toxic carbon monoxide in the home. Homeowners are urged to regularly check their vents during winter months.
It is also essential for homeowners to know where their master shut off valve is located in case a pipe does freeze and burst. The utility advises finding this valve, usually located in the basement, and making sure everyone in the household knows its location.
In addition to protecting their own homes, residents are reminded of their responsibility towards fire hydrants near their homes. The Madison Water Utility takes care of over 9,000 fire hydrants in the city and asks for the community's help in keeping them clear of snow. This ensures that firefighters can easily locate and access them in case of a fire.
