Maryland Department of Agriculture Announces Reduction in Electric Vehicle Charger Registration Fee
TelAve News/10898479
ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 11, 2026) ~ ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 11, 2026) - As the use of electric vehicles continues to rise in Maryland, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) has taken steps to ensure consumer protection and equitable commercial transactions involving measurements and quantities. The MDA's Weights and Measures Program, responsible for enforcing these standards, has announced a reduction in the registration fee for public electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) from $150 to $75 per port.
This decision comes after the adoption of EVSE standards by the National Council on Weights and Measures and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook 44. In December 2025, MDA extended the deadline for registering public EVSE chargers to July 1, 2026, in order to engage with electric vehicle owners, businesses, industry representatives, and local communities. After considering feedback from these stakeholders, the department made the decision to reduce the registration fee for public EVSE chargers.
According to Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks, this reduction in fees is a result of listening to concerns and feedback from electric vehicle owners, local businesses, and industry partners. He believes that this move will not only support a reliable and accurate electric vehicle charging network but also ease costs for Maryland residents and businesses.

It is important to note that only public EVSE chargers are required to be registered by July 1st. This includes chargers available for use by the general public at locations such as parking lots or shopping centers. Chargers at private residences, workplaces, multifamily dwellings or those used exclusively for private fleets where commercial transactions do not occur do not require registration.
For those who need assistance with registering their EVSE chargers in Maryland or have questions about which chargers require registration, MDA's Weights and Measures Program has provided a webpage with information and frequently asked questions. They can also be contacted directly for further inquiries.
The Weights and Measures Program is responsible for overseeing the registration, inspection, and testing of commercial weighing and measuring devices across the state. This ensures that consumers receive the accurate quantity of products and services they purchase. With the reduction in fees for registering public EVSE chargers, MDA is taking steps to support the growth of electric vehicles in Maryland while also protecting consumer rights.
