Mayor Brandon Johnson Advances Transportation Equity with Approval of Measure to Preserve Chicago's Bus Terminal

CHICAGO ~ Chicago City Council Passes Ordinance to Acquire Intercity Bus Terminal, Ensuring Equitable Transportation Options for Residents
In a major win for equitable and accessible transportation in Chicago, the City Council has passed an ordinance authorizing the acquisition of the intercity bus terminal at 630 W. Harrison Street. Introduced by Mayor Brandon Johnson, this ordinance secures the long-term future of a critical transportation hub that serves over 460,000 passengers annually.
Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of transportation as a pathway to opportunity for all Chicagoans. He stated, "Every Chicagoan deserves access to safe, affordable, and reliable ways to get where they need to go." The intercity bus service connects hundreds of thousands of people to work, family, and opportunities every year. Mayor Johnson expressed his pride in leading the charge to protect this essential public asset.
The bus terminal currently accommodates approximately 70 daily arrivals and departures from carriers such as Greyhound, FlixBus, Jefferson Lines, and Barons Bus Lines. It provides a secure and climate-controlled facility with public restrooms and waiting areas. This makes it an essential resource for working families, seniors, people with disabilities, students, and residents without access to a personal vehicle.

Chicago Department of Transportation Commissioner William Cheaks Jr. highlighted the critical role that intercity bus service plays in affordable travel throughout the region. He stated that it is essential for Chicago to have an accessible and centrally located bus terminal to serve this need. By preserving this facility through public ownership, the City is safeguarding a vital transportation hub for hundreds of thousands of travelers each year.
The City has maintained a bus terminal in continuous operation at multiple locations since 1928. This underscores its longstanding role as a regional transportation center connecting travelers to destinations across Chicago, Illinois, and the Midwest.
The newly passed ordinance authorizes the City to acquire the terminal and maintain uninterrupted operation while addressing deferred maintenance and making necessary improvements. These improvements include HVAC installation, roofing updates, and safety measures to enhance the passenger experience. Ownership of the facility will transfer to the City in one year, ensuring an orderly transition and long-term stability. Public ownership will also support equitable access for carriers and travelers.

2FM Commissioner Julie Hernandez-Tomlin expressed her department's readiness to assume management of the bus terminal. She stated, "We are proud to help provide an improved experience for all of our riders." The department plans to lead tangible improvements to the existing facility while supporting efficient operations at this important public asset.
This ordinance comes at a time when cities are facing increasing pressure on intercity bus infrastructure. The loss of centralized terminals can lead to reduced service, accessibility barriers, and a shift toward curbside pickup and drop-off locations that may create congestion and safety challenges.
By securing public ownership of the facility, the City is ensuring continued access to safe, accessible, and reliable transportation options for its residents. Today's action reflects Mayor Johnson's commitment to strengthening public infrastructure and expanding access to opportunity through reliable transportation.
