CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) have announced the launch of a new community outreach bus, "Papa Blu," as part of their efforts to connect with residents and promote opportunities within the aviation industry. The bus was unveiled today at 79th Street and Maryland Avenue in the Chatham and Greater Grand Crossing communities during the final "Take Back the Block" event of the summer.

According to Mayor Johnson, Papa Blu is a way to ensure that all neighborhoods in Chicago feel connected to the opportunities created by O'Hare and Midway International Airports. He stated, "Chicago's airports belong to the people of Chicago, and Papa Blu is a fresh new way we're making sure every neighborhood feels connected." The bus features two flight simulators that will allow young people to experience what it's like to be a pilot and potentially spark an interest in pursuing a career in aviation.

Commissioner Michael McMurray of the CDA also expressed his excitement about Papa Blu, stating that it will act as a mobile gateway to the aviation industry. He believes that it will inspire the next generation of pilots, flight attendants, engineers, and innovators. McMurray also credited First Deputy Commissioner Tracey H. Payne for her vision and leadership in making Papa Blu a reality.

The centerpiece of Papa Blu is its flight simulators, which are sure to captivate both kids and adults alike. With guidance from members of the CDA's Workforce Development team, visitors can try their hand at flying a plane and learn more about potential careers in aviation. The bus also offers educational resources such as games and books designed to pique young people's curiosity about the industry.

In addition to resources for young people, Papa Blu also offers information tailored for high school and college students as well as mid-career professionals. This includes job openings at O'Hare and Midway airports, internship opportunities, and aviation training programs. The bus also provides resources for small business entrepreneurs, such as assistance with certification and responding to requests for proposals.

This is not the first community outreach bus from the CDA. "Big Blu" was unveiled in 2022 and has since made appearances at over 65 local events. The CDA hopes that Papa Blu will continue to make a positive impact on the community and promote opportunities within the aviation industry.
