~ As the 14th annual Mesa Marathon approaches, excitement is building for the nearly 10,000 runners expected to participate in this year's race. Taking place on Saturday, Feb. 14, the marathon has become a key early-season qualifier for the prestigious Boston Marathon. But that's not all – the race has also been recognized as the best marathon in Arizona by Race Rave's "Best Marathons in the U.S." poll for 2025.

This year's Mesa Marathon holds even more significance as it falls on Valentine's Day and also coincides with Arizona's 114th birthday. Participants will not only have the satisfaction of crossing the finish line, but they can also celebrate their accomplishment and Arizona's special day.

The marathon course offers stunning views of the desert and valley as it winds its way from Usery Mountain to Mesa Riverview Park. With a downhill route that drops nearly 1,000 feet, runners are sure to enjoy a scenic and exhilarating experience.

However, with such a large event comes some necessary road closures. From 4 a.m. to 2 p.m., certain roads will be closed to accommodate the race. To help residents plan their routes accordingly, an interactive detour map is available at gis.mesaaz.gov/mesamarathon. Roads will reopen as runners pass through and cleanup is completed.

City Manager Scott Butler expressed his enthusiasm for the Mesa Marathon and its positive impact on both tourism and local businesses. "The Mesa Marathon continues to grow and brings runners and tourism dollars from across Arizona and the country," he said. "It's a great boost to our restaurants and hotels in Mesa."

To minimize disruptions for residents during race day, Mesa's Transportation Department is offering one-on-one route planning assistance from Monday-Thursday leading up to the event, as well as on race day itself. Residents can call 480-RUN-MESA or email barricade@mesaaz.gov for personalized detour help.

For those using public transportation, several Valley Metro bus routes will be detoured on race day, including routes 30, 48, 96, 104, 112, 120, 128, 136, The Fiesta Buzz, and the Downtown Buzz. Riders are encouraged to use the Valley Metro app or visit valleymetro.org/rider-alerts for updates.

Founded in 2012 by Brooksee, the Mesa Marathon offers four races: the full marathon, half marathon, 10K and a free Kids 1K run. The half marathon boasts a net elevation loss of nearly 200 feet as it heads towards Riverview Park. Meanwhile, the scenic course for the 10K begins at Fitch Park and winds through historic downtown Mesa. The Kids 1K run is a non-timed race for children aged 12 and under at Riverview Park and is limited to the first 500 registrants.
