Mesa: Naturalization Ceremony is Key Part of Arizona Celebration of Freedom
TelAve News/10831963
~ Mesa, Arizona - On July 4th, approximately 100 new U.S. citizens will be welcomed to the city of Mesa in a naturalization ceremony. This annual event, organized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), has been a part of the Arizona Celebration of Freedom Presented by AT&T since 2015. The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. at the Mesa Convention Center, located at 263 N. Center St.
Leading the ceremony will be USCIS Phoenix Field Office Section Chief Cynthia Yanez, who will administer the Oath of Allegiance to the new citizens. Joining her in this momentous occasion will be Mayor John Giles and Councilmember Jenn Duff.
The idea to include a naturalization ceremony as part of the Arizona Celebration of Freedom was brought forth by the Sertoma Club, a founding partner of the event and a Mesa service organization founded in 1954 with a motto of "Service to Mankind." According to Walt Zimmerman, a member of the Sertoma Club since 1974, "We were looking at other activities to add to the Arizona Celebration of Freedom and adding the naturalization ceremony on Independence Day was a natural fit for the event and our organization." Zimmerman himself will lead the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance during the ceremony.

In addition to organizing the naturalization ceremony, the Sertoma Club also coordinates other patriotic-themed aspects of the Arizona Celebration of Freedom such as the Hall of Flags display, History of Flags programs, and opportunities for attendees to sign replicas of the Declaration of Independence and receive pocket-size copies of the U.S. Constitution donated by Hillsdale College. Attendees can also test their knowledge with copies of civics test questions given to those applying for U.S. citizenship.
The Arizona Celebration of Freedom Presented by AT&T will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Mesa Convention Center and Mesa Amphitheatre. This family-friendly event will feature live music, patriotic displays, a BMX stunt show, picnic games, and a spectacular fireworks display.
