MoWest's New CNC Training Program Graduates First Class — A Win for the Local Workforce
TelAve News/10867885
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - TelAve -- ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Western State University's Center for Workforce Development is proud to announce the first graduates of its "Intro to CNC Machining & Milling" training program. This new initiative equips eight local professionals—from five area companies—with essential manufacturing skills that are increasingly in demand across the region.
The hands-on training took place at the recently opened Houlne Center for Convergent Technology, a state-of-the-art facility outfitted with CNC machines, lathes, mills, and other advanced equipment designed to simulate real-world manufacturing environments. Located at 4141 Mitchell Avenue, the Houlne Center provides everything needed for immersive, skills-based learning.
The program is part of a growing portfolio of workforce initiatives championed by Rebecca Lobina, MoWest's Director of Workforce Development, who joined the University on April 1, 2025. "This training was created for the adult, full-time employee," said Lobina. "That is why we offered the program from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. twice a week."

The curriculum, developed by Dr. Dennis Merritt, Professor of Practice in the Engineering Technology Department, introduces participants to the fundamentals of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining and milling—critical tools in today's high-tech manufacturing world. The course was taught by two industry experts.
The final class of the program will be held tonight, July 2, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Houlne Center. Members of the media are invited to join in celebrating the dedication and accomplishments of this inaugural group. "They had a lot to learn, including manual milling, intro to Inventor software, CAM, and operating a CNC machine," explained Lobina.
With a growing emphasis on strengthening local industry through targeted training, MoWest remains committed to developing programs that meet the evolving needs of the St. Joseph workforce and economy. They recently launched almost two dozen workforce training programs, including a 5-part Leadership Series, which was requested by multiple regional employers. That series begins July 30th.
