Naperville Police Participate in St. Patrick's Day Traffic Safety Campaign
TelAve News/10856298
~ As St. Patrick's Day approaches, communities across the state are gearing up for the annual celebrations. From parades to parties and green beer, the holiday is known for its lively festivities. However, with these celebrations comes an increased risk of impaired driving. To combat this danger and ensure the safety of all motorists, the Naperville Police Department has joined forces with the Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Transportation for a special traffic safety campaign.
According to Naperville Police Sergeant Derek Zook, with St. Patrick's Day falling on a Monday this year, it is expected that celebrations will begin over the weekend prior. In light of this, Sgt. Zook urges everyone to celebrate responsibly and plan ahead for a sober ride home before heading out. He emphasizes that the safety of both individuals and others on the road depends on making smart decisions.
In addition to targeting alcohol- and cannabis-impaired drivers, Naperville Police will also be focusing on seat belt enforcement during this campaign. This is especially important at night when seat belt usage rates tend to be lower. The department will also be cracking down on speeding, distracted driving, and all other traffic violations.

Whether attending a party or going out to a bar, safety should always be a top priority during St. Patrick's Day celebrations. It's not about luck; it's about making responsible choices. When it's time to leave, designated drivers should ensure they are sober before getting behind the wheel. It's also important to remember that walking while impaired can also be dangerous, so having a sober friend walk home with you is recommended.
The Naperville Police Department offers some important tips for staying safe during St. Patrick's Day festivities: never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs; if you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement; if you have a friend who is about to drive impaired, take their keys away and make sure they have a safe way to get home; and always remember to buckle up.
Funding for this special enforcement campaign comes from federal traffic safety funds provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. With these efforts in place, the Naperville Police Department hopes to keep the streets safe and prevent any tragedies during this year's St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
