ATLANTA, June 17, 2025 ~ A recent survey conducted by GP PRO, a division of Georgia-Pacific and a leading manufacturer of advanced dispensing solutions for commercial facilities, has shed light on the attitudes and behaviors surrounding hand hygiene among consumers. The national survey explored hand hygiene practices both at home and in public, revealing some interesting findings.

According to the survey, 84% of consumers rated their hand hygiene as excellent or good both at home and away. However, many also acknowledged that there is room for improvement. 43% of respondents said they could improve their hand hygiene by washing longer, while 42% said they could wash more often. Additionally, 39% felt they could be more thorough in their hand washing routine and 40% said they could incorporate hand sanitizer into their routine.

The survey also highlighted the importance of visible and thorough hand hygiene practices to consumers. When proper hand hygiene is followed, such as washing hands, drying them properly, and using gloves when handling food or providing healthcare services, 74% of consumers reported feeling comfortable in restaurants and 78% at the dentist. However, this comfort level dropped significantly to just 29% in hospitals if gloves were used without first washing hands. Drying hands was also found to be an important part of staying clean, with 54% of respondents stating that it is essential. Most preferred paper towels (47%) over air dryers (29%).

"This research highlights just how vital visible, thorough hand hygiene practices are—not just for health but for building trust," he stated.

The survey also revealed insights into daily routines related to hand hygiene. While 57% of consumers reported using hand sanitizer up to five times a day, a majority (62%) washed their hands with soap and water six or more times a day.

The survey also delved into consumer expectations for hand hygiene among professionals, particularly nurses. Most consumers (28%) expected nurses to wash their hands 20-30 times per shift. The survey found that this expectation was close to reality, with 28% of nurses reporting washing their hands 11-20 times per shift, mostly using soap and paper towels.

The survey was conducted in partnership with research platform SUZY and gathered responses from over 1,000 consumers aged 21 to 70.
