CHICAGO - TelAve -- The WriteBridge™ Documentation Project has released a new investigative analysis titled "From Newsroom to Crisis Consultant: Kevin Riley at Sage Communications Advisors." The report examines Kevin Riley's transition from regional newspaper editor to communications consultant, focusing on the unresolved questions surrounding his editorial record at the Dayton Daily News and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Riley, who served as editor of the Dayton Daily News from 2007 to 2011 and later as editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, is now listed as part of Sage Communications Advisors, a firm that provides strategic communications, crisis counsel, reputation management, and stakeholder messaging for nonprofit organizations.

The new analysis asks a central question: when a former editor now advises organizations on reputation and crisis communications, should his own editorial record be examined through the same standards of transparency, disclosure, and accountability?

In Dayton, the Dayton Daily News scrutinized City Day Community School after students posted extraordinary state-verified academic gains. The investigation produced no criminal charges, no Ohio Department of Education fraud findings, and no educator license revocations. Yet, according to the WriteBridge™ Documentation Project, the newspaper never issued a public correction acknowledging the school's documented academic record.

The analysis also raises questions about an alleged undisclosed conflict of interest. Rachel Armour, founder of WriteBridge™ and developer of the literacy program implemented at City Day, previously worked at the Dayton Daily News during Riley's leadership period. The report states that Riley later oversaw coverage involving Armour's work without publicly disclosing that prior professional relationship.

The article further compares Riley's Dayton record with his later tenure at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where the newspaper's reporting on Atlanta Public Schools helped shape one of the most high-profile education scandals in U.S. history. While the Atlanta case resulted in convictions, the report notes continuing criticism of the use of RICO statutes against educators, questions about erasure-analysis methodology, and concerns that comparable scrutiny was not applied evenly across districts.
