~ New Rochelle, NY - The City of New Rochelle has announced the opening of its Section 8 waiting list for eligible program applicants. This marks the first time since 2020 that the city has opened its waiting list, with online applications being accepted until Monday, June 17 at 4:00 PM.
The Section 8 Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), aims to assist local cost-burdened families by providing them with a Housing Choice Voucher to offset their rent expenditures. As the city continues to bring new affordable housing units online, the Section 8 program will provide current and future residents with access to reduced-cost housing opportunities. Currently, there are 760 individuals and families enrolled in the program.
Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert expressed her support for the opening of the waiting list, stating that "as affordability continues to be a significant concern throughout the NYC region, suburbs like New Rochelle are rapidly expanding their housing supply and creating resources to support new and current residents." She also emphasized that this move demonstrates the city's commitment to providing affordable housing opportunities and empowering families to build stable futures.

The federally subsidized program is available for very low-income families, elderly individuals (age 62+), and those with disabilities. Preference will be given to New Rochelle residents and veterans in these categories. Applicants will be selected through a lottery system for placement on the waiting list.
To assist with applications, the city will be hosting walk-in sessions in both English and Spanish at various locations around New Rochelle where free computer access is available. Those who require reasonable accommodations due to a disability can contact the Section 8 office via mail or email before June 7, 2024.
Acting City Manager Wilfredo Melendez highlighted the city's goal of building pathways to generational wealth and security for its community. He stated that "in line with this objective, we intensified our affordable housing program outreach efforts, forging thoughtful partnerships with developers, nonprofits, local schools, and churches to offer a diverse range of assistance programs." This is to ensure that residents have the necessary information to understand the Section 8 Program and its application process.
