NEWS RELEASE: Nicole Sherry Joins Maryland Department of Agriculture as Assistant Secretary of Plant Industries and Pest Management

ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 13, 2026) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced the addition of Nicole Sherry as the new assistant secretary for Plant Industries and Pest Management. This appointment was made by Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks on May 13, 2026.

Sherry brings with her a wealth of experience in turf management, having spent 23 years with the Baltimore Orioles. She most recently served as the senior director of field operations since 2023. In 2004, she made history by becoming the first female head groundskeeper in Eastern League history. Two years later, she became only the second woman in Major League Baseball to hold this title when she was named head groundskeeper for the Orioles. Sherry continued to excel in her role and was promoted to director of field operations in 2021 before being named senior director in 2023. She holds a degree in agriculture from the University of Delaware.

Secretary Atticks expressed his excitement about Sherry joining the team at MDA, stating that her extensive experience managing complex operations and leading teams, combined with her strong agricultural background and proven leadership skills, will be a valuable asset to the department.

In her new role as assistant secretary, Sherry will be responsible for overseeing various aspects of Plant Industries and Pest Management on a day-to-day basis. This includes managing pesticide regulation, mosquito control, plant protection, weed and forest pest programs, turf and seed oversight, and overseeing the Office of the State Chemist.

Sherry's contributions have not gone unnoticed outside of her professional career. In 2016, she received the Mary Pickersgill Award for Women's Leadership in Business from the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House for her community leadership, innovation, and ability to inspire others. In 2019, she was honored with the Dick Ericson Founders' Award for her exemplary leadership in sports field and facility management and positive impact on the industry.

Sherry expressed her enthusiasm for joining the Maryland Department of Agriculture and working with communities across the state. She looks forward to collaborating with the dedicated and knowledgeable individuals in the Plant Industries and Pest Management teams.

With her extensive experience, passion for agriculture, and proven leadership skills, Sherry is sure to make a valuable contribution to the Maryland Department of Agriculture and its mission to support and promote the state's agricultural industry.
