Riverdale Park District awarded grant to create community art center
TelAve News/10872758
RIVERDALE, Ill. - TelAve -- LISC, in collaboration with Cook County Bureau of Economic Development and Cook County Arts, announced that Riverdale Park District is one of 14 nonprofit organizations selected to receive Creative Placemaking grants. The grants, ranging from $50,000 to $250,000, will support transformative, community-driven art projects across suburban Cook County, including public murals, community gardens, arts centers, and more.
The Riverdale Park District received $62,520 for the creation of ArtSPARK Community Garden, a hub for individuals of all ages to enjoy immersive experiences in gardening and art. The garden will feature ADA-compliant raised beds and paths, pollinator gardens, and seating. The gallery will showcase local artists and include wooden walls for community-created murals. There will also be chalk-art areas, as well as a dedicated space for art instruction and workshops.

"The ArtSPARK Community Garden will provide numerous benefits, including fostering community engagement, promoting environmental sustainability and offering educational opportunities. The garden will serve as a peaceful retreat for residents, encouraging physical activity and social interaction, while the art installations and workshops will stimulate creativity and cultural appreciation," said Dr. Michael J. McNicholas, CTRS, Special Recreation Services of Sertoma Star Services
Cook County Arts is a $5 million initiative led by the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development and focuses on strengthening the suburban arts and culture sector. The initiative is supported by funding the County received through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The County allocated $2.75 million to the Cook County Arts Creative Placemaking grant program, which opened in February 2025. Creative placemaking integrates arts, culture and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities.
