SAKAI 21 includes a suite of entirely new learning management features and improvements to existing tools. At the center of Sakai 21 is a focus on student performance and collaboration that is far more robust than competitor offerings. These collaboration tools include a new dashboard that help students learn more effectively. It provides students with task lists and calendars that cross courses, as well as quick access to assignments, discussions, and other actionable items in each of their courses.

Sakai 21 includes improvements to Sakai's LESSONS tool that help instructors make better use of colors and multi-column layouts to build effective learning pathways. Sakai also includes a new dark mode that enhances the experience of learners and instructors.

SoftwareReviews, a division of the world-class IT research and consulting firm Info-Tech Research Group, named Sakai the top LMS in 17 of 22 survey categories, and the top LMS overall. Scoring highest in satisfaction with the learning management feature with 91% (14% higher than the average), software users were happy with their experiences working with Sakai's virtual classroom management, MIS and reporting, instructor workflow and online tests.
