TelAve News/10897291
~ South Bend, Indiana - On May 28, 2026, the city of South Bend celebrated the completion of the A. David Filer V. Tennis Courts at Leeper Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The event was attended by Mayor James Mueller, members of the Common Council, the Filer family, the South Bend Community Tennis Association, and representatives from the United States Tennis Association.
The newly completed tennis courts are a significant investment in recreational opportunities for residents and a continued enhancement of community amenities. Mayor James Mueller expressed his gratitude to all those involved in making this project a reality. He stated that this facility not only expands opportunities for competitions but also honors the legacy of David Filer, a young athlete whose passion for tennis continues to inspire the community.
The tennis courts have been named in memory of Albert "David" Filer V., a local tennis prodigy who left a lasting impact on the community with his talent, sportsmanship, and dedication to tennis at a young age. His parents, A. David Filer IV and his wife, spoke fondly of their son's love for tennis and how he inspired countless players despite his battle with glioblastoma.

The approximately $1.8 million project was made possible through private donations from generous individuals as well as funding from organizations such as Visit South Bend Mishawaka's Hotel-Motel Tax Board, Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, and the United States Tennis Association. The completed project includes 13 new double courts with upgraded net anchors, posts and nets, sidewalks and fencing to enhance accessibility and overall playing experience.
The design for this project was done by WBK Engineering while Byrne & Jones Sports Construction handled its construction under the leadership and coordination of South Bend's Venues Parks & Arts and Public Works teams.
Darla Lippert from the South Bend Community Tennis Association expressed her pride in being part of this project that not only benefits the local tennis community but also attracts players and families from beyond St. Joseph County. She also highlighted the overwhelming support from various organizations, which shows the importance of this facility to the community. Lippert stated that Leeper Park is more than just a set of courts, it is a place where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to compete, learn, and create lifelong memories.
