~ Spokane, WA- On the night of June 7th, Sergeant Mohondro of the Spokane Police Department was on his regular patrol in the south side of the city. While patrolling near W Sumner Ave and S Grove St, he noticed a possible house fire in the 500 block of W Sumner Ave. Without hesitation, he quickly responded to assist.

Upon arriving at the scene, Sgt. Mohondro was approached by a family member of one of the residents of the burning house. The family member informed him that an elderly female was still inside and unlocked the front door for him. The family member also mentioned that the woman's bedroom was on the second floor where flames were visible.

Despite being hit with thick smoke upon entering through the front door, Sgt. Mohondro could hear faint cries for help coming from inside. Without hesitation, he made his way through the smoke-filled home and located a stairwell leading to the second floor.

Sgt. Mohondro bravely climbed up to find the elderly woman lying injured at the top landing of the stairs. With smoke growing thicker and both their lives in danger, he quickly picked her up and carried her out of the house to safety.

Shortly after, crews from Spokane Fire Department and AMR arrived at the scene. The 82-year-old woman was transported to a hospital for her injuries while SFD crews were able to extinguish the fire and confirm that no one else was inside.

Justin de Ruyter from SFD commended Sgt. Mohondro's actions stating, "Seconds are critical in a fire, and Sergeant Mohondro's actions on Sunday evening clearly made a difference." He also emphasized how dangerous fires can be with their rapid growth and toxic gases that can quickly incapacitate victims.

Sgt. Mohondro's bravery beyond his duty did not go unnoticed as he risked his own life without any protective gear or breathing equipment to rescue the elderly woman. He was evaluated by AMR on the scene before returning to his patrol duties.

This incident serves as a reminder of the bravery and selflessness displayed by first responders like Sgt. Mohondro, who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve their community.
