In response to this tragedy, the City of Spokane and its Police Department underwent significant reforms. These included improved training programs such as Crisis Intervention Training and the creation of the Behavioral Health Unit. Over the years, SPD has continued to prioritize ongoing training and improvement efforts. This includes implementing Enhanced Crisis Intervention Training, reviving Neighborhood Resource Officers to strengthen neighborhood relationships, and launching the Dialogue Policing Program in 2024.

The relationship between SPD and OPO has also grown stronger over time through intentional efforts from officers, SPD leadership, and dedicated employees and commissioners at OPO. Chief Hall even traveled with OPO for national training on civilian oversight.

Thanks to overwhelming support from Spokane's voters, funding for OPO has increased through the Community Safety Sales tax passed in 2024. However, on this somber anniversary, it is essential to remember that building community trust is an ongoing process that requires transparency and respect for all individuals.
