St. Louis: Comptroller Darlene Green's Educational Op-Ed Re: Proposition B.
TelAve News/10844355
~ St. Louis, MO - In the midst of a challenging year for the city, Comptroller Darlene Green is urging residents to vote against Proposition B on the upcoming November ballot. The proposition, which claims to give the Board of Aldermen more control, has been deemed a threat to the city's financial stability by Green.
As a long-time resident and civic leader of St. Louis, Green has witnessed the city overcome numerous obstacles such as population decline, infrastructure issues, socioeconomic disparities, economic downturns, and persistent crime problems. Through it all, St. Louis has maintained a strong financial management system within its government.
"Our city employees work tirelessly every day to meet the basic needs of our constituents," Green stated. "These essential services are the backbone of our community and when they run smoothly, residents hardly notice. But when they don't, it disturbs our quality of life."
Green expressed deep concern over Proposition B and its potential to dismantle the very system that has kept St. Louis financially stable during turbulent times. Despite facing challenges such as population loss, St. Louis has maintained an enviable high credit rating of AA which translates to real benefits for residents.

"This high credit rating means lower interest rates when we borrow," Green explained. "This allows our limited funds to stretch further and accomplish more for our community."
Green emphasized that this financial stability is not by accident but rather the result of prudent fiscal management and strong controls that have served as a check against imprudent spending.
However, Proposition B threatens to disrupt this delicate balance under the guise of giving more legislative oversight. While proponents argue for increased control from the Board of Aldermen, Green argues that the current system is not broken and is working exactly as intended in protecting the financial interests of St. Louis and its residents.
"As voters, we have a responsibility to see Proposition B for what it truly is - a misguided power grab that is not in our best interest," Green urged. "I urge my fellow St. Louisans to reject Proposition B and vote NO on November 5th. Let's maintain the good credit and financial stability that has served our city well. St. Louis deserves leaders who prioritize the city's long-term health over short-term political gains."
