SYDNEY - TelAve -- In a fire emergency, stairwells are critical for safe evacuation. Stair pressurisation systems maintain positive air pressure inside the stairwell to keep smoke out, giving occupants more time to exit safely.

How it works

When the fire alarm is triggered, the system activates automatically. Fans begin to pressurise the stairwell, pumping air in to create higher pressure inside. This higher pressure blocks smoke from entering through door gaps. Pressures are also balanced so doors can still be opened without excessive force. The result is a clear, smoke-free stairwell that provides a safe path for building occupants.

Stair pressurisation is required under the Building Code of Australia (Smoke Hazard Management, clause E2). Systems are installed to AS/NZS 1668.1 and current NCC standards, and must be maintained as part of regular fire safety schedules under AS 1851.

Effective pressurisation involves correct air pressures, air change rates and door pull forces. Getting these right helps prevent smoke from entering stairwells during a fire, when occupants are required to evacuate the building, and ensures safe evacuation for everyone inside.
