Tacoma City Council Adopts Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program
TelAve News/10898942
~ The Tacoma City Council has recently announced the adoption of the Six-Year Comprehensive Transportation Improvement Program Amended 2026 and 2027-2032. This program, developed in alignment with the Transportation and Mobility Plan (TMP) adopted in June 2025, aims to support a multimodal system that safely and efficiently connects people to places across the city.
As stated in the press release, this comprehensive program reflects the City's commitment to prioritizing safe and connected access for users of all modes, ages, and abilities. With a strong emphasis on active transportation and transit access, the plan seeks to provide mobility options that promote healthy living, protect the environment, and contribute to Tacoma's culture and competitiveness.
The program was shaped by extensive community outreach efforts, including public hearings and attendance at neighborhood events. This inclusive approach was grounded in a culture of access, opportunity, and belonging, with a deliberate focus on improving safe and connected access for residents of diverse income levels and racial or ethnic backgrounds. One of the key goals is to decrease the percentage of individuals spending more than 45% of their income on combined housing and transportation costs.

The adoption of this program also satisfies the requirements of Section 35.77.010 of the Revised Code of Washington, which mandates that each city's legislative body adopt a comprehensive transportation program for the next six years. This document outlines how the City plans to use revenues for non-motorized transportation purposes. Additionally, timely adoption ensures that Tacoma remains eligible for crucial state and federal grant funding.
More information about this program can be found on the City's website. The City Council encourages all residents to review these details as they work towards creating a safer, more connected community for all.
