~ The City of Tacoma's Events and Recognitions Committee (CERC) has announced that they are now accepting nominations for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in January 2027. The committee is seeking to recognize outstanding members of the Tacoma community for their service and contributions.

Individuals can be nominated for the Emerging Leader Award, while groups, organizations, and individuals are eligible for the Lifetime Service Award. These honorees will have demonstrated a meaningful commitment to serving the community through human rights efforts, dedication to education, or sharing of their skills. The nominees should embody the teachings and actions of Dr. King and represent people from all backgrounds in their pursuit of hope, healing, and sustainable peace.

Past honorees include F. Jerome "JD" Davis, Uncle Boy Chun Fook, Brian Gatewood Sr., Shawn Durnen, Gloria Joy Kazuko Muhammad, and Lisa Mathusz. These individuals showcase a diverse range of leadership, service, and advocacy that aligns with Dr. King's vision of hope, justice, and opportunity for all.

CERC is responsible for organizing the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and will carefully review all nominations before selecting the 2027 honorees. The event will take place on Monday, January 18th at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center on 1500 Commerce Street.

In addition to honoring these outstanding community members, the celebration will also feature live performances by local artists and a community outreach fair. It will be an opportunity for neighbors to come together with civic leaders and local organizations.
