~ As heavy rainfall and flooding threats loom over portions of West Texas and the Texas Panhandle, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to ensure the safety of Texans. Today, he directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources.

In a statement, Governor Abbott reassured citizens that the state is prepared to handle the potential dangers posed by these weather conditions. He urged Texans to stay informed and follow the guidance of state and local officials.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall are expected in Far West Texas, South Plains, and Panhandle starting today and intensifying throughout the week. The primary hazards associated with these storms are excessive rainfall and flash flooding. In light of this, Governor Abbott reminded citizens to never attempt to drive or walk through flooded roadways as they may be deeper and more dangerous than they appear. He emphasized the importance of turning around and avoiding such situations.

At Governor Abbott's direction, various state emergency response resources have been made available to support local severe weather and flood response operations. These include Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1), regional personnel from TDEM, personnel monitoring roadway conditions from Texas Department of Transportation, game wardens and rescue boat teams from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, troopers and helicopters with hoist capability from Texas Department of Public Safety, Severe Weather Support Packages with medics from Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force), Disaster Assessment and Recovery Agents from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, power-outage monitoring from Public Utility Commission of Texas, natural-gas supply monitoring from Railroad Commission of Texas, and air/water/wastewater monitoring from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
