Texas: Governor Abbott Announces $30,000 Reward For Information On Commissioner Betancourt Shooting
TelAve News/10885388
~ In a recent press release, Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Office of the Governor's Public Safety Office is offering a reward of up to $30,000 for information leading to the arrest of Reynaldo Mata-Rios. The suspect is wanted in connection with the murder of Eddy Betancourt, who was found deceased on December 27, 2025.
According to the McAllen Police Department, a warrant for Mata-Rios' arrest was issued on December 28, 2025, one day after Betancourt's body was discovered. Betancourt was the vice chairman of the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Board of Directors and had been appointed by Governor Abbott to serve on the Texas Facilities Commission.
The Texas Department of Public Safety has also added Mata-Rios to their 10 Most Wanted Fugitives List. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 6 feet tall and weighing 195 pounds. He has brown eyes and brown hair. It is believed that Mata-Rios crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in a red truck on December 28, making him a potential flight risk.

Governor Abbott expressed his condolences for Betancourt's family and urged anyone with information about the crime to come forward. "The State of Texas remains in regular coordination with local law enforcement to provide all necessary resources to ensure those responsible face the consequences of their actions and the full weight of the law for this heinous crime," said Abbott.
Texans who have any information about Mata-Rios' whereabouts are encouraged to call the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online through the Texas 10 Most Wanted website. Tipsters can remain anonymous and will be provided with a tip number instead of using their name.
It should be noted that Mata-Rios should be considered armed and dangerous, and Texans are advised not to try to apprehend him themselves. "Fugitives should be considered armed and dangerous," warned Governor Abbott.
The Governor also emphasized the importance of the public's help in bringing Mata-Rios to justice. "With the public's help, we will capture those responsible and put them behind bars," he said. The reward offered by the Office of the Governor's Public Safety Office serves as an incentive for anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
