~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that six schools in the Coastal Bend area have been awarded a total of $1,819,053 in Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). These grants will support career and technical education (CTE) training programs by providing funding for the purchase and installation of equipment to train 585 students for high-demand occupations.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of investing in the future workforce, stating that "our most valuable investment is the opportunities we give to our young workforce." He believes that this grant funding will provide students with the necessary training to build a solid foundation for their future careers and keep Texas as an economic powerhouse.

TWC Chairman Joe Esparza also highlighted the significance of these grants, stating that they will allow schools to provide hands-on training that mirrors the modern workplace. He believes that this will equip students with technical skills needed to excel in high-demand fields such as nursing and electrical engineering.

The awards were presented earlier today at a ceremony attended by state and local officials, as well as school staff at Del Mar College's Oso Creek campus in Corpus Christi. The six JET grants include:

- A $306,834 grant to Del Mar College to train 43 students as dental hygienists.

- A $226,518 grant to Freer Independent School District (ISD) to train 162 students as licensed practical and vocational nurses in partnership with Del Mar College.

- A $331,792 grant to Pettus ISD to train 20 students as registered nurses in partnership with Coastal Bend College.

- A $345,268 grant to Skidmore-Tynan ISD to train 65 students as licensed practical and vocational nurses in partnership with Del Mar College.

- A $328,296 grant to Sinton ISD to train 12 students as electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians in partnership with Del Mar College.

- A $280,345 grant to Victoria College to train 283 students as registered nurses.

These grants are made possible through funding provided by the Texas Legislature each biennium. TWC uses JET grants to support the development or expansion of career and technical education programs for public community, state, and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations.
