~ Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will be providing $56 million in federal funding to rural hospitals. This funding will go towards advancing prevention, wellness, and nutrition programs in these communities.

According to Governor Abbott, this investment is crucial in ensuring that rural Texans have access to quality healthcare. He believes that this funding will not only expand care but also combat chronic diseases and provide much-needed resources for prevention and nutrition.

This initiative, known as the "Make Rural Texans Healthy Again" program, is part of the larger Rural Texas Strong plan. Its goal is to improve health outcomes and chronic conditions in rural areas by targeting diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease, and obesity.

Rural hospitals will have the opportunity to use the federal funding to expand their services. This includes screenings, after-hours care, community wellness programs, and making healthy food more readily available.

Stephanie Muth, Executive Commissioner of HHS, emphasized the importance of access to care and nutritious food in promoting good health. She believes that this investment will help strengthen prevention efforts and support long-term health in rural communities.

Eligible public and private rural hospitals can apply for funding through a competitive process until June 4th. The $56 million announced today is part of a larger $281 million first-year award received by HHSC from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Rural Health Transformation Program. This program is 100% federally funded and includes six initiatives aimed at supporting rural communities.

Over the next five years, Texas estimates receiving approximately $1.4 billion in federal funding through this program to support rural healthcare. However, it is important to note that this funding is contingent upon meeting all applicable program requirements.
