Texas: Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce $99 Million In Federal Funding For Rural Hospitals To Recruit Workers
TelAve News/10894713
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will be providing $99 million in federal funding to rural hospitals. This grant opportunity is part of the Rural Texas Strong plan and aims to assist health care providers in recruiting and retaining workers.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of accessible healthcare for all Texans, stating that it is crucial for the sustained success of the state. He expressed his gratitude towards HHSC for their efforts in ensuring that every Texan has access to quality healthcare.
The initiative, titled "Next Generation of the Small Town Doctor and Team," will allocate $99 million towards programs and incentives for current and future clinicians to practice in rural communities. These funds can be used for various purposes such as developing scholarships and programs for local high school students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, offering relocation or signing bonuses for providers, and creating new residency training programs by partnering with academic institutions.

Stephanie Muth, Executive Commissioner of HHS, highlighted the significance of strong rural health care systems in promoting the well-being of families and communities across Texas. She stated that this investment will support doctors, nurses, and care teams who serve rural Texans on a daily basis.
Licensed rural health providers will have the opportunity to apply for funding through a competitive process. The deadline for applications is May 27th.
The $99 million announced by Governor Abbott is part of the $281,319,360.67 first-year award received by HHSC from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Rural Health Transformation Program. This program is 100% federally funded and includes six initiatives aimed at providing funding to rural communities.
It is estimated that Texas will receive approximately $1.4 billion in federal funding over five years through this program to support rural health care. However, this funding is contingent upon meeting all applicable program requirements.
