Governor Abbott expressed concern over the northward spread of the NWS fly from Mexico towards the southern border of the United States. He emphasized that although it is not yet present in Texas or the U.S., it poses a serious threat to the state's livestock industry and wildlife. To further strengthen their efforts, Governor Abbott has directed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) to establish a joint Texas New World Screwworm Response Team. Additionally, he has partnered with Secretary Brooke Rollins from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to create a new $750 million Domestic Sterile NWS Production Facility in Edinburg, Texas.
