Texas: Governor Abbott Launches One Stop Shop Website For NWS Information
TelAve News/10899185
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed the launch of a new and improved website that provides comprehensive information for Texans regarding the New World screwworm (NWS). The website, located in the Texas Division of Emergency Management's Disaster Portal, aims to be a "one stop shop" for all NWS related resources and information.
According to Governor Abbott, the NWS poses a direct threat to Texas' livestock, wildlife, and rural economy. He believes that this new website will equip producers, veterinarians, and families with essential tools to combat this pest. The website, screwworm.texas.gov, offers facts, maps, identification methods, and certification resources that will help Texans detect problems early on and report cases promptly. Governor Abbott is confident that with this information at hand, every Texan can take action to protect their land and animals from the NWS.
The newly launched website serves as a central resource where Texans can access reliable multimedia information about the NWS. This includes fact sheets, videos, and educational materials. Additionally, visitors can find various resources and tools such as background information on the NWS, how to spot it, sample collection procedures, TAHC NWS zone maps, USDA case dashboard, links to best practices for livestock and wildlife management. The website also offers details on registering for the no-cost NWS Certified Inspector Training.

In order to effectively combat the spread of NWS in Texas, state and federal partners are working together collaboratively. One crucial aspect of their efforts is expanding public outreach and providing clear and accessible information to reduce risk.
Governor Abbott has taken decisive action in response to the NWS threat. He directed the creation of a joint Texas NWS Response Team which brings together state agencies along with producers, veterinarians, wildlife experts, and federal partners. In addition,Governor Abbott joined USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins in announcing a $750 million investment in a new sterile fly production facility in Edinburg. He also issued a statewide disaster declaration to mobilize resources and strengthen response efforts before the first detection of NWS. Following the first confirmed cases in Texas, all available state resources were deployed and the State Emergency Operations Center was activated. Governor Abbott also joined Secretary Rollins and federal partners at the Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory in Kerrville for a briefing on the ongoing NWS response. Furthermore, he launched a free online training course to certify more NWS inspectors across Texas and announced federal funding to strengthen NWS inspection capacity.

Texans are urged to remain vigilant in the fight against NWS. It is important to regularly inspect livestock and pets for wounds and report any suspected cases immediately, including those in wildlife. For livestock and pets, reports can be made to the TAHC's 24-hour veterinarian call line at 1-800-550-8242, while wildlife reports can be made to Texas Parks and Wildlife's 24-hour biologists' call line at 512-389-4505. It is crucial not to move affected animals. For the latest updates, guidance, and resources on NWS, Texans are encouraged to visit screwworm.texas.gov and screwworm.gov.
In conclusion, with the launch of this enhanced website, Governor Abbott hopes that Texans will have all the necessary information and resources at their fingertips to effectively combat the threat of NWS. By working together and staying informed, they can protect their land, animals, and way of life from this pest.
