Texas: Governor Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Patrick, Speaker Burrows Laud Property Tax Relief Passage
TelAve News/10864639
~ In a historic move, the Texas Legislature has passed multiple bills aimed at providing significant property tax relief for hardworking homeowners and business owners in the state. Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker Dustin Burrows have all praised the passage of Senate Bill 4, Senate Bill 23, House Bill 9, Senate Joint Resolution 2, Senate Joint Resolution 85, and House Joint Resolution 1.
Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude to Lieutenant Governor Patrick, Speaker Burrows, and all members of the Texas House and Senate for their efforts in delivering much-needed property tax reductions for Texans. He emphasized that this legislative session has seen the highest allocation of funds towards property tax relief in the history of Texas. The governor also urged Texans to approve the new increases in homestead and business property tax exemptions when they vote this November.
Lieutenant Governor Patrick highlighted the significant progress made since he took office in 2015. He noted that at that time, the homestead exemption was only $15,000. However, with the passage of Senate Bill 4 and Senate Bill 23, it has now been increased to $200,000 for seniors and $140,000 for non-seniors. This means that on average, senior homeowners will no longer have to pay any school property taxes for the rest of their lives as long as they live in their homes. Homeowners under 65 years old will also see a nearly 50% reduction in their school taxes. The lieutenant governor also pointed out that almost a quarter of the state's budget this year is dedicated to property tax relief.

Speaker Burrows echoed his colleagues' sentiments and commended House members for working together with their counterparts in the Senate to deliver these savings for Texans. He emphasized that these measures were a top priority for both chambers and expressed confidence that Texas voters will approve them on the ballot this fall.
Governor Abbott had declared property tax relief an emergency item in his 2025 State of the State Address earlier this year, underscoring the importance of addressing this issue during the legislative session.
With the passage of these bills, Texas homeowners and business owners can look forward to keeping more of their hard-earned money. The state government's commitment to providing property tax relief is evident in the significant allocation of funds towards this cause. As these measures head to the ballot for approval by voters, it is clear that the Texas Legislature has taken a significant step towards easing the burden on taxpayers and providing much-needed relief.
