Texas: Governor Abbott, THECB Announce 17 Million In Grants To Support Workforce Education And Training Programs
TelAve News/10894828
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the state of Texas will be providing nearly $17 million in grants to support short-term workforce education and training programs. These programs are aimed at preparing individuals for high-demand occupations and will be available to qualifying higher education institutions.
In a statement, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of investing in workforce education to ensure that Texas remains a strong economic force for generations to come. He also acknowledged the role of higher education institutions in shaping the future workforce and providing opportunities for Texans.
The grants will be distributed through three different programs: the Texas Reskilling and Upskilling through Education (TRUE) Grant Program, TRUE Pathways Design & Planning Grants, and the Texas Invests in Meaningful Employment (TIME) Grants. These programs are open to public, lower-division colleges and technical schools that offer credentials with high value in the job market.
According to Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser, these grants are designed to help students of all ages acquire the necessary skills for financially rewarding careers in high-demand occupations. By expanding educational opportunities, collaborating with employers, and ensuring affordable credentials, the state is working towards its strategic plan of building a talent-strong Texas.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will administer these grants based on various factors such as a program's relevance to the workforce and consultation with stakeholders. In the past, TRUE grants have supported credentials for jobs like plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, medical assistants, and emergency medical technicians.
The application deadlines and grant amounts for each program are as follows: TRUE Pathways Design and Planning - $1 million for 2026-27 with a deadline of May 29; TIME program - $3.3 million for 2026-28 with a deadline of May 15; TRUE Grant program - $12.5 million for 2026-28 with applications opening in July.
The TRUE Grant Program was established by the Texas Legislature in 2021 to provide more credentials of value and support stronger employment outcomes for Texans. The initiative has been funded by the 88th and 89th Legislatures to support career and technical education programs.
These grants are a testament to the state's commitment to investing in its workforce and providing opportunities for individuals to succeed in high-demand occupations. With these programs, Texas is paving the way for a strong and prosperous future.
