Texas: Governor Greg Abbott Announces 456 MW Of New Power In Houston
TelAve News/10898385
~ Houston, Texas - Governor Greg Abbott has announced the successful completion of 456 megawatts (MW) of new, dispatchable natural gas power generation units at NRG Energy's TH Wharton Generating Station. These units, backed by a loan through the Texas Energy Fund (TxEF), will provide enough electricity to power over 100,000 homes during peak hours.
Governor Abbott expressed his satisfaction with the progress being made in building reliable power generation to support the state's growing economy. "These new power generation units are a great addition to our energy network that powers Texans' daily lives," he said. He also congratulated NRG Energy for their efforts in contributing towards keeping Texas' future bright for generations to come.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) is responsible for administering the TxEF, which aims to incentivize the construction of new, reliable power generation and grid resiliency and reliability projects. PUCT Chairman Thomas Gleeson stated that this project is exactly what Texans had voted for when they approved the TxEF. "The TxEF is funding new power generation that Texans can rely on for years to come," he said. He also emphasized that NRG's project coming online is proof that the fund is delivering tangible benefits for Texans and effectively utilizing taxpayer dollars to strengthen the grid.

NRG Energy's President and CEO Robert Gaudette expressed his team's commitment towards providing reliable power for Texans, especially as summer approaches. "Our team delivered these units safely, on budget and on schedule," he said proudly. He also acknowledged the importance of the Texas Energy Fund as a practical solution to a real challenge and thanked all partners involved in making this project a success.
The newly completed simple-cycle combustion turbine units at TH Wharton will play a crucial role in ensuring reliability during periods of peak electricity demand. These dispatchable power units are designed to respond quickly to changing grid conditions, such as hot summer afternoons and severe winter weather events.
In addition to the TH Wharton facility, NRG Energy is also working on TxEF-supported generation projects at its Cedar Bayou and Greens Bayou sites. These planned projects are expected to add more than 1.5 gigawatts of new natural gas generation capacity in Texas by 2028.
With the completion of these new power generation units, Texas is one step closer to achieving its goal of providing reliable and sustainable energy for its citizens. The success of the Texas Energy Fund and partnerships with companies like NRG Energy demonstrate the state's commitment towards meeting the growing energy demands of its high-growth economy.
