They're Baaaa-ck: SDGE Deploys 300 Goats in San Diego, Launches Instagram to Spotlight Wildfire Prevention Measures
TelAve News/10866343
SAN DIEGO, June 17, 2025 ~ San Diego Gas & Electric (SDGE) is taking a unique approach to wildfire prevention by combining traditional methods with modern technology and community engagement. The company recently launched a new Instagram account, @thegoatsdge, to showcase its use of goats in clearing flammable vegetation from transmission corridors. This innovative strategy was on full display as 300 goats paraded through a San Diego neighborhood to their next grazing site, drawing enthusiastic support from the community.
The use of goats as "vegetation managers" is not only environmentally friendly but also highly effective. These animals are able to navigate steep and rugged terrain that is often inaccessible to humans or machinery. As they graze, they consume invasive plant species and their seeds, while also fertilizing the soil. This process not only reduces erosion but also promotes the regrowth of native vegetation. Since 2021, SDGE's herds have cleared thousands of high-risk acres across San Diego County.
According to Brian D'Agostino, vice president of wildfire and climate science at SDGE, the goats are just one element of the company's comprehensive approach to wildfire mitigation. "Our record of 17 years without a major utility-related catastrophic wildfire reflects our collective measures to protect the region and continue providing our customers with safe, reliable service," he said.

But why goats? These animals offer several advantages over traditional methods such as herbicides or heavy machinery. Their grazing activity enhances soil health by increasing nitrogen levels and fostering more resilient ecosystems. Additionally, they do not generate sparks or runoff like mechanical or chemical methods, making them ideal for use near homes and sensitive habitats.
To further highlight the importance of emergency preparedness, wildfire safety, and sustainable grazing, SDGE has launched a dedicated Instagram account for their goats: @thegoatsdge. Through this platform, followers can stay updated on the goats' ongoing contributions while also learning about wildfire prevention and safety tips year-round.
SDGE's comprehensive wildfire mitigation program also includes a Wildfire and Climate Resilience Center, which serves as a hub for research, development, and implementation of innovative solutions. The center combines AI and predictive modeling with emergency response coordination to facilitate swift and integrated action against regional threats. The company also operates one of the nation's most sophisticated utility-owned weather networks and utilizes a full-time utility meteorology team to predict weather and better understand fire potential.

In addition to these technological advancements, SDGE has also taken physical measures to enhance grid resilience. This includes completing over 315 miles of strategic undergrounding, installing 1,600 fire-resistant poles, and conducting more than 10,000 miles of advanced LiDAR inspections.
The recent goat parade through a San Diego neighborhood not only showcased the effectiveness of SDGE's wildfire prevention efforts but also highlighted the company's strong community partnerships. Residents of Clairemont Mesa gathered to cheer on the goats as they made their way through the neighborhood, escorted by SDGE employees and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department personnel.
"These goats are nature's wildfire prevention team," said Capt. Jason Shanley, Fire Information Officer for San Diego Fire-Rescue. "We love that we get to work with the real 'G.O.A.T's of the fire service, and we are grateful for their partnership and hard work to help us keep the community safe and preserve the environment!"
As wildfires continue to intensify nationwide, SDGE's innovative approaches are setting an example for the energy sector as a whole. By combining traditional methods with cutting-edge technology and community engagement, SDGE is leading the way in wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts.
