DALLAS - TelAve -- Avery was bruising easily. She was constantly exhausted, refusing to eat, and struggling to keep up in ballet class. When Avery suddenly passed out, her parents rushed her to the doctor in a panic.

In tears, Avery's mother explained everything that had been happening. After a blood test, the doctor called a neighboring children's hospital and instructed them to admit Avery immediately. They were told that Avery likely had cancer, and without urgent treatment, she might not survive the weekend.

It wasn't cancer. Avery was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare disease that prevents the body from producing enough blood cells. Doctors told the family that a bone marrow transplant would be Avery's only chance of survival.

Avert remained in the hospital with her mom Hayley, physically carrying her from test to test—X-rays, CT scans, and biopsy after biopsy—while trying to learn about this devastating disease. Avery's father stayed home, three hours away, to care for their other children.

Traveling back and forth to the hospital required Avery's father to reduce his work hours. So their income dropped while medical bills mounted. The financial burden was overwhelming.

When their landlord told them, "You still have to pay your bills," the family thought they might lose their home.

"Avery's diagnosis was rare, and I was told there wasn't any funding," Hayley explained. "Many people warned us, 'Good luck paying your medical bills.'" But after joining an online aplastic anemia support group, someone told her about the Icla da Silva Foundation.
