Trump Said Seniors Would Pay No Tax on Social Security — But Not Everyone Got In
TelAve News/10906906
OPELIKA, Ala. - TelAve -- President Donald Trump promised tax relief for older Americans, including the idea of eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits.
The tax changes that ultimately became law, however, work differently—and whether a senior benefits can depend on age, income and filing status.
Under the new rules, Americans age 65 and older may qualify for an additional federal income-tax deduction of up to $6,000 per eligible person. Married couples filing jointly may qualify for as much as $12,000 when both spouses are eligible.
The deduction is available for tax years 2025 through 2028 and can be claimed by eligible taxpayers whether they take the standard deduction or itemize. However, it begins phasing out when modified adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 for an individual or $150,000 for a married couple filing jointly.

That distinction matters because the change does not simply make Social Security benefits tax-free for every senior. Existing federal rules governing when Social Security benefits become taxable still apply.
For seniors who do qualify for the new deduction, the change raises another practical question:
What can they do to make more of the money they keep go further?
Rabbit Hole Gateway has created a new consumer savings resource looking at practical ways seniors can stretch their money on purchases and expenses they may already have.
