CAPE CORAL, Fla. - TelAve -- A new discovery explains why an estimated 95% of pool players struggle to consistently pocket balls — and it has nothing to do with skill. A search for "suck at pool" on YouTube has historically returned tens of thousands of results — videos of players struggling to pocket balls, further evidence of how widespread the problem is.

Joe Sturtz, a competitive pool player with over 300 tournament wins and 400+ students taught, has identified a visual defect in the design of standard pool balls that makes it difficult for the human eye to accurately locate a ball's true center. A video released by Sturtz shows this directly: overlaying a protractor across the ball reveals how the ball's surface distorts the eye's ability to accurately read angles — the exact judgment a player relies on to aim and pocket a ball. Based on decades of observing players in pool halls, sports bars, and pool rooms, Sturtz estimates that more than 90% of players he sees firsthand genuinely struggle with the game. The dimpled, textured surface found on nearly all pool balls camouflages the ball's actual spherical form — making precise aiming far harder than most players realize.

"It's not your fault," says Sturtz. "The equipment itself is working against you."

Sturtz developed the Sturtz-Sighting And Aiming Technique (S-SAAT), paired with custom textured balls designed to correct this visual distortion. Sturtz has designed four distinct sets of textured, patterned pool balls to correct this visual gap. He notes that in the last 80 years, only two sighting-and-aiming techniques have been widely taught in pool, and neither has solved the problem. The technique and materials are available now as a $20 digital download on his website.
