August 5, 2025 ~ Houston, TX - According to a recent report by Tourism Economics for Houston First, the city of Houston saw a record-breaking number of visitors in 2024. With a total of 54 million visitors, the city experienced a significant economic impact of over $16 billion.
The report revealed that visitors to Houston spent a record-breaking $11 billion in 2024, an increase of 8.6% from the previous year. This spending had a secondary effect on the city's economy, resulting in a total economic impact of $16.6 billion.
The total number of visitors to Houston reached 53.9 million in 2024, setting a new record for visitation and marking a 4.8% increase from the previous year. Of these visitors, 52.6 million were domestic or U.S. visitors and 1.3 million were international visitors.
This influx of visitors also had a positive impact on the job market, directly supporting nearly 121,800 jobs and generating $2.2 billion in state and local taxes.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire expressed his pride in this achievement, stating that it speaks to all the amazing things that people can see and do in the city. He credited Houston First, the region's destination marketing organization, for promoting Houston's brand around the world and making it an attractive destination for tourists.

In addition to setting records for visitor spending and visitation numbers, last year also saw significant growth in hotel bookings and air travel through Houston's two passenger airports. Approximately 63 million people traveled through these airports, representing an increase of nearly 5% from the previous year. Hotel room nights also saw an increase of 8.2%, with over 25 million rooms booked in metro Houston.
Michael Heckman, President and CEO of Houston First, attributed this success to their focused efforts on generating business for the hospitality industry and contributing to the city's overall economic growth. He stated that the data clearly validates their strategies and they are determined to continue building on this success in the future.
The report also highlighted the regional impact of tourism, with over 92 million people visiting the metropolitan region as a whole in 2024, a 5.5% increase from the previous year. Of these visitors, 89 million were from the U.S. and 3 million were from abroad, including nearly 2 million from Mexico alone. Visitation from Mexico saw a significant increase of over 16% year over year.
Overall, direct visitor spending in the metro region totaled $16.6 billion, resulting in a total economic impact of $27 billion and supporting over 206,000 jobs.
With these impressive numbers and continued efforts by Houston First to promote the city as a top tourist destination, it is clear that Houston's tourism industry will continue to thrive in the years to come.
