Banned - Confessions of a Former Cosmetic Dentist
Recent Evidence Support Concerns Raised by Alberta Dentist as Author Calls For Reform are Ignored

RED DEER, Alberta - TelAve -- Since publishing his tell-all book Confessions of a Former Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Michael Zuk has been fighting retaliation from his local authority but he now suggests the ban on his book could have led to gross overtreatment, and even deaths. "Recent studies are pointing to the overuse of certain high-tech X-ray devices called CBCT and increased cancer rates in children." The book referred to this topic as 'overkill with X-rays' about unjustified use of CBCT or cone beam dental imaging in routine screening and certain braces techniques.

A UK orthodontist, Dr. Kevin O'Brien, who shares the same concerns with radiation risks recently posted several blogs on the subject of cancer rates following advanced dental X-rays and noted backlash from his readers (link: https://kevinobrienorthoblog.com/risks-of-child-cbct-revisited/). His online commentary has also covered other concerns raised in Dr. Zuk's book which substantiate topics which the local authority felt potentially could 'harm the integrity of the profession.' The Alberta dental whistleblower says he is standing firm in his right to expose concerns that the public deserves to know about and says he continually writes to the Health Minister and dental boards in the hope there will be improvements.

Some of the recent controversies that have remained out of the press include:
  • A recent status change in a seminar linked to complaints and a Class Action lawsuit
  • Unusual trends that were discussed in the book that continue to be a threat to the public
  • Why backlogs in the Alberta dental complaint system are a bigger threat to the public than the Health Minister may understand
  • What the lack of personnel with dental training in key positions on dental boards means for public safety
  • How well-meaning dental regulation can be misapplied with unintended consequences
  • A recent example of Canadian dental authorities burying concerns about a dangerous device highlighted in a US media investigation
The retired Red Deer dentist is frustrated by the current government's recent firing of a Health services chief for her whistleblowing activities. Dr. Zuk sees this as a sign he will not get the support necessary. Zuk continues to call for an independent enquiry to the status of the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta with a need to implement protection for those who speak out about threats to public safety and consequences for college authority employees who neglect to take appropriate action.
